On Friday, the second meeting of the WADA executive committee was held in Sydney, where the list of prohibited substances and methods for 2023 was approved.
The Board approved the experts’ recommendation to ban tramadol from competition from 1 January 2024. It is stated that the delay in implementation should allow one year for discussion and training of athletes, their environment and medical staff to better understand the practical ban on tramadol. The risks of physical dependence, opiate addiction and overdose, and abuse of tramadol in the general population are of concern and have led to its designation as a controlled drug in many countries. WADA-funded studies have also confirmed tramadol’s ability to improve physical performance.
The Executive Committee also endorsed the experts’ recommendation that cannabis’ status on the list remain unchanged. The Executive Committee had previously agreed to initiate a review of the status of cannabis on the list only as a non-competitive substance. An analysis was conducted that determined that the item should remain on the list.
