Italian Scarso replaces Pozdnyakov as head of the European Fencing Confederation
MOSCOW, October 2 – RIA Novosti. According to Instagram, Italian Giorgio Scarso was elected president of the European Fencing Confederation (EFC) (the activities of Meta (social networks Facebook and Instagram) are banned in Russia as extremist organizations).
Voting took place at the EFC’s extraordinary congress in Warsaw on Saturday. 24 delegates voted for Scarso, 20 delegates voted for Nikolai Mateev, vice president of the organization, president of the Iceland Fencing Federation. Pascal Tesch of Luxembourg withdrew before voting began.
Scarso is 76 years old. He chaired the Italian Fencing Federation from 2005 to 2021.
The head of the organization since 2016 is Russian Stanislav Pozdnyakov, who was re-elected for a new term in 2021. On March 20, the EFC board passed a vote of no confidence to Pozdnyakov, as there were concerns about a conflict of interest regarding the removal of Russian fencers from the competition. In May, the EFC congress voted to resign from the presidency, which he had to resign prematurely. In June, the organization did not adopt changes that would suspend Russia’s membership in the organization.
