Stadium riots kill 174 in Indonesia
MOSCOW, October 2 – RIA Novosti. According to the Associated Press, the death toll in the riots that broke out at the stadium in Malang, Indonesia, rose to 174.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday after the match between the football teams “Arema” and “Persebaya” (2:3). The fans of the losing club rushed to the field. Police officers used tear gas to calm them, causing panic and a stampede. Citizens also breathed because of pepper gas. Dardak noted that more than 100 injured people are in hospitals and 11 of them are in serious condition. About 127 victims were previously reported.
Yunus Nusi, general secretary of the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI), said at a press conference that the International Football Federation (FIFA) wanted a report on the tragedy.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed his deepest condolences for the tragedy. He instructed the chief of police and the head of PSSI to conduct a thorough investigation. The head of state also ordered PSSI to temporarily suspend the Indonesian football championship until the investigation is complete.
