The tragedy occurred on Sunday after the match between the football teams “Arema” and “Persebaya” (2:3). The fans of the losing club rushed to the field. Police officers used tear gas to calm them, causing panic and a stampede. Citizens also breathed because of pepper gas. Indonesian authorities have reported 174 dead so far.

“La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have agreed to hold a minute’s silence to express their condolences and wish a speedy recovery to the people of Indonesia, particularly to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy at Kanjuruhan stadium in Java. All remaining matches of the eighth round matches will begin with a minute of silence, with a moment of silence.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed his deepest condolences for the tragedy. He instructed the chief of police and the president of the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) to conduct a thorough investigation and suspend the Indonesian football championship pending completion.
