Spanish La Liga pays homage to the victims of the stampede in Indonesia.
MOSCOW, October 2 – RIA Novosti. The seventh and eighth round matches of the Spanish Football Championship will begin with a minute of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the stampede at the stadium in Malang, Indonesia. reported On La Liga’s website.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday after the match between the football teams “Arema” and “Persebaya” (2:3). The fans of the losing club rushed to the field. Police officers used tear gas to calm them, causing panic and a stampede. Citizens also breathed because of pepper gas. Indonesian authorities have reported 174 dead so far.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed his deepest condolences for the tragedy. He instructed the chief of police and the president of the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) to conduct a thorough investigation and suspend the Indonesian football championship pending completion.
