TN: Police use gas and rubber bullets during Gimnasia v Boca Juniors game
BUENOS AIRES, 7 October – RIA Novosti. The Argentine Football Championship match, played in La Plata between local Gimnasia and Boca Juniors, was stopped after the police used pepper spray at the stadium entrance, informs TV channel TN.
Fans clashed with the police at the arena entrance as more tickets were sold than needed for the match. The attempts of the fans to enter the stadium caused the police to use gas and rubber bullets.
The match started at the appointed time, but in the 9th minute, the players and coaches started rubbing their eyes and coughing: The stadium was officially filled with tear gas. Its effect was also experienced by the spectators already present in the stadium.
The referee decided to stop the match. The players have been removed from the field. On the way to the dressing rooms, some of them tried to help by throwing water on the audience.
One victim is known to have been hit by a rubber bullet.
The newspaper Nacion later reported that a 57-year-old fan died of a heart attack while being taken to the hospital.
A stampede at a stadium in the city of Malang in East Java a few days ago resulted in the deaths of more than 130 people. This was due, among other things, to the actions of the police using tear gas on the field.
