This has never happened before: a German wins the “Golden Shoe” in the North American professional soccer league MLS. The top scorer award goes to Hany Mukhtar.
Berliner Hany Mukhtar is the top scorer in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Nashville SC forward scored 23 goals in 33 games in the main round – 44 percent of his team’s goals – and was instrumental in keeping his team in the playoffs.
Muhtar is the first German MLS top scorer
The 27-year-old is the third European to score in MLS, behind the first German and Serbian Nemanja Nikolic and England’s Bradley Wright-Phillips. Argentina’s Sebastian Driussy (Austin FC) and Hungary’s Daniel Gazdag (Philadelphia Union) beat one of Muhtar’s goals on the leaderboards.
“Even if the team’s success is above all else, such an individual award is a very, very good thing,” Muhtar of the German Press Agency said on Sunday. The former German junior international (48 games, 20 goals) is now the favorite for the most valuable player of the season award.
Nashville in the playoffs against the LA Galaxy
Nashville is now facing the Los Angeles Galaxy in the playoffs. With both teams holding 50 points in the Western Conference, LA Galaxy secured fourth place at the table and the home average advantage. The winner of this duel meets Los Angeles FC, which bids farewell as the best team in the Western Conference.
In MLS there are playoffs, the winner of which is recognized as the champion after the main round. First, the top seven teams in each of the Eastern and Western Conferences are matched up with the final runners-up of the playoffs. The winner of this game gets the title in MLS.
In addition to Mukthar, Kai Wagner of the Philadelphia Union and Jasper Loffelsend of Real Salt Lake also have a chance to win the championship from the German pros.
