Kanchelskis: It’s too early to rejoice at the news about the integration of Crimea into the Russian football system
MOSCOW, October 12 – RIA Novosti, Alena Sulizova. It is too early to rejoice at the news about the possible integration of Crimean clubs into the Russian football system, former Manchester United and Russian national football player Andrey Kanchelskis told RIA Novosti.
The head of the league, Nail Izmailov, had a meeting with the head of the Crimean Football Union (CFU) in Crimea, Sergei Borodkin, the press service of the National Football League (FNL) told RIA Novosti on Wednesday. He discussed the integration of the region into the Russian football system. FNL President met with league, clubs, infrastructure and documents.
According to Kanchelskis, a few years ago the transition of Crimean football clubs to the Russian championship seemed more realistic.
“I was there and contacted the leaders who said that the Crimean clubs were about to be integrated into Russian football, but that’s all it was said. And then, a few years ago it was much more real, now the situation is completely different and so is the atmosphere and the situation. The 2024 (European) championship and 2026 (world championship) I think we’re flying in 2026. Well, let’s see what happens next,” added the agency’s source.
With the decision of the Union of European Football Federations, Crimean clubs compete in the regional championship after Crimea joins the Russian Federation, the organization prohibits the participation of Crimean clubs in the tournaments of the Russian Football Union.
