Ovechkin and Kuznetsov support cancer-fighting hockey player “Salavat Yulaev” Amirov
MOSCOW, November 20 – RIA Novosti. According to the Capitals press service, Washington Capitals’ Russian forwards Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov supported Salavat Yulaev’s cancer-fighting player Rodion Amirov before the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season game with Colorado Avalanche.
As part of the annual Hockey Against Cancer campaign in the NHL since 1998, players and clubs publicly support people battling the disease. Ovechkin and Kuznetsov made posters “I fight for Rodion Amirov”.
In April 2021, Amirov signed a three-year rookie contract with National Hockey League (NHL) club Toronto, which selected him 15th overall in the first round of the 2020 draft. In February, the Canadian club reported that the striker had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. The Russian player, hired by Salavat Yulaev until the end of the 2021/22 season, was treated in Germany. He returned to Ufa after a course of chemotherapy in April. In July, Salavat Yulaev extended Amirov’s lease for another season.
In November, it was reported that the hockey player was undergoing additional cancer treatment.
