Qatar pays more than $350 million in compensation to World Cup migrant workers
MOSCOW, November 20 – RIA Novosti. Referring to the statement made by the UEFA human rights working group on Twitter, journalist Rob Harris reported that the Qatari authorities paid more than $350 million in compensation to immigrants who worked in the construction of the 2022 World Cup grounds.
According to the report, since 2018, compensation payments to migrant workers have been made mainly for cases related to delayed and non-payment of wages.
In addition, Qatar World Cup Heritage Fund funds will be used to help some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Members of the UEFA working group will return to Qatar in 2023 to see the implementation of the initiatives first hand.
In 2021, a number of national federations called on FIFA to pressure Qatari authorities to improve the situation for migrants working in the country’s construction of World Cup venues. In April, the organizers of the tournament admitted violations of working conditions at the three companies participating in the preparations. In May, human rights organization Amnesty International sent a letter to FIFA president Gianni Infantino demanding $440 million in compensation to migrant workers involved in the construction of World Cup venues for violating working conditions.
The World Cup in Qatar kicked off with a Group A match between Qatar and Ecuador on Sunday.
