MOSCOW, May 18 – RIA Novosti. Eritrean cyclist Binyam Ghirmay has retired from the Giro d’Italia after suffering an eye injury during the medal ceremony.
Racing for the Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert Materiaux team, Ghirmay became the first black cyclist and the first Eritrean to win the Giro on Tuesday. During the awards ceremony, he unsuccessfully opened a bottle of champagne and the cork splashed on his face, after which he was hospitalized for an in-depth examination.
“I couldn’t start the race today because of my eyesight. I need a rest to heal my eye. I felt a little sad about the champagne but when I got back to the hotel the team was very happy.” nail Girmaia Twitter Intermarche – Wanty – Gobert Materiaux.
The team doctor noted that the eye had to fully heal and therefore further participation in the Giro became impossible for the cyclist.
