Athletic: Martinez reaches verbal agreement to head Portugal national football team

MOSCOW, January 7 – RIA Novosti. Belgium’s former coach Roberto Martinez has reached a verbal agreement to be appointed as the head coach of the Portugal national team.

According to the source, the contract with the 49-year-old specialist could be signed by the end of next week.

Earlier, the media reported that the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) included Martinez among the main candidates for the post of head coach of the national team. At the same time, Martinez allegedly took a break for now to decide whether to continue coaching the national teams or return to club football.

Martinez has been coaching the Belgium national team since 2016 and won a bronze medal with them at the 2018 World Championships in Russia. The Spaniard left the Belgian team after an unsuccessful performance at the World Championships in Qatar, where the Belgian team failed to advance from the group and skipped the teams of Morocco and Croatia, the future semi-finalists of the tournament. Before joining Belgium, Martinez coached English Premier League clubs Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton.

The Portuguese national team’s coaching position was also vacant after the World Cup in Qatar, when Fernando Santos resigned. The Portuguese national team advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament in Qatar, where they lost to the Moroccans.
