Karjakin: Chess could become an elite sport without big expenses
MOSCOW, January 18 – RIA Novosti, Oleg Bogatov. Deputy world champion Sergey Karyakin said in an interview with RIA Novosti that chess can find its niche and become an elite sport that does not require large expenses.
Karjakin is the silver medalist of the 2016 World Championship match. It is ranked tenth in the January rankings of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
The interlocutor of the agency noted that the commercialization of chess is relevant, but the sport has other attractive aspects.
“Chess has to fight for its place in the sun. Let’s face it, football, hockey and other sports are more glamorous and are already being promoted. But on the other hand, chess can find its niche as an intellectual sport. As an elite sport. A sport that doesn’t require big expenses anymore. we talk to you and we can set up a chessboard and play a game or two, and in that case we don’t need a football field, a goal and a ball. This is great and a big plus for chess,” stressed the expert.
“As for the commercialized approach, we can see positive moments in the example of the Chess Stars tournament held for the second time at Crocus. And you can see the creative approach, it stands out that the organizers have done a lot. The chess players are playing here not just for themselves, but for the audience. It’s also a new and unique approach. “Girls and boys can play on their own. Or watch the world’s leading chess players play. It’s really cool,” added Karjakin.
