Kafelnikov describes the Russian tennis players’ performance at the Australian Open as disastrous
MOSCOW, January 19 – RIA Novosti, Andrey Simonenko. Olympic champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the former world’s first racket player, told RIA Novosti he was disappointed with the performance of the leading Russian tennis players at the Australian Open.
In Thursday’s second-round matches, only Ekaterina Alexandrova (19th seeded) won among all Russians, stronger than American Taylor Townsend. Veronika Kudermetova, placed under the ninth number, lost in three matches to American Katie Volynets. Russian Lyudmila Samsonova, the 18th racket of the tournament, won three games against Croatia’s Donna Vekic, while Anastasia Potapova was defeated by Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in two games. Previously, Russia’s first racket, Daria Kasatkina, withdrew from the tournament.
The interlocutor of the agency does not believe that the tense end of last season and participation in the last tournament of the year could be the reason for the failures of Kasatkina and Kudermetova. “No need to complain about it, everyone is in the same situation. There was enough time to recover and get in shape. There are days when everything gets out of control. It was one of those days for our tennis, I guess.” Veronika Kudermetova was still struggling, losing in three sets and Luda Samsonova and Nastya Potapova put on a very unsuccessful performance.”
