The WHL allowed eight teams to qualify for the playoffs due to the absence of international matches.

MOSCOW, January 31 – RIA Novosti. The Women’s Hockey League (WHL) Board of Directors has decided to allow eight teams to qualify for the 2022/23 season playoffs, according to the league’s official website.

Relevant changes to the WHL’s sporting regulations were approved on January 31.

“Many clubs have applied to the league with a proposal to increase the number of play-off participants from the 2022/2023 season. The club’s proposal is due to the cancellation of international events previously planned with the participation of Russian national teams. In April 2023, additional time was released for hockey matches as part of the WHL championship. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation supported the clubs’ proposal.”

9 teams participate in the WHL regular season. The WHL’s playoffs will begin with the quarterfinals. In the 1/4 and 1/2 finals, teams will play a maximum of two winning streaks, while the final will be held in a series format of up to three wins.

The Council of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international competitions indefinitely at the end of February 2022 due to the situation in Ukraine.
