Pokrovskaya on the return of Russian athletes: discussions continue, this is only the first step

st. PETERSBURG, February 2 – RIA Novosti, Dmitry Edigarev. Tatyana Pokrovskaya, Russia’s honored trainer in synchronized swimming, expressed her confidence in the return of Russian athletes to international competitions in her meeting with RIA Novosti, making first-step calls for this from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the world sports community.

On Wednesday, Kirsty Coventry, a member of the IOC Executive Committee and two-time Olympic swimming champion, called for the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Jean Sykes, chairman of the US Olympic Committee (USOPC), also spoke out in support of the Russians’ return.

“Of course we will return. I would like to play under our own flag and anthem. Negotiations are ongoing and we are waiting. But this is only the first step,” said Pokrovskaya.

On January 25, the IOC Executive Board called for the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions with neutral status, while proposing that athletes who actively support special operations in Ukraine should not be allowed. After that, IOC President Thomas Bach said in an interview with Spiegel that Russian and Belarusian athletes will be able to participate in the 2024 Olympics with a neutral flag.
