Striker “Washington” Ovechkin does not know whether it is possible to break Gretzky’s record
MOSCOW, February 4 – RIA Novosti. Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin admitted that he did not know whether it would be possible to break Canadian Wayne Gretzky’s goal record in the National Hockey League (NHL).
In December of last year, the Russian took a clean second place ahead of Gordie Howe (801 stamps) in the list of the best snipers in NHL history. Gretzky holds the league record with 894 goals.
With 812 goals, Ovechkin is the second best goalscorer in NHL history. The 37-year-old Russian is 82 goals behind leading Canadian Wayne Gretzky. NBC Sports had previously predicted that Ovechkin would break Gretzky’s current score-rate record in November 2024.
Ovechkin is a graduate of Dynamo Moscow, for which he won the Gagarin Cup in 2013. The striker became a three-time world champion as part of the Russian national team. He won the Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018. His current contract with Capitals runs until the end of the 2025-26 season.
