Daily Mail: Chelsea and Benfica bosses almost got into a fight in Fernandez talks

MOSCOW, February 4 – RIA Novosti. British “Chelsea” and Portuguese “Benfica” leaders nearly got into a fight during negotiations for the transfer of football player Enzo Fernandez, according to the Daily Mail’s report based on the Record.

On Wednesday, Chelsea announced that they have signed Fernandes until June 2031. “Blue” will play under the number 5 for the midfielder. Benfica said the transfer cost Chelsea 121m euros. The transfer was the largest in English football history.

On January 3, the owner of the “blue” Todd Boeli, “Benfica” president Rui Costa and the player’s manager Jorge Mendes joined the talks for Fernandez’s transfer to Chelsea. During the negotiations, a disagreement broke out between the parties, which almost turned into a “fight”. The reason for the dispute was Boely’s proposal to reduce the transfer amount from 120 to 90 million euros, with the inclusion of several players from the English club in the deal. Costa left the boardroom angrily. Talks resumed when Chelsea again offered €120 million for Fernandez.

It was also reported that the player requested to be allowed to go to Chelsea and threatened to shoot a video containing accusations against the Benfica management.

Fernandes, 22, is a graduate of River Plate and has been at Benfica since summer 2022. In total, he played 29 matches for Portugal, scoring four goals and providing seven assists. The midfielder played for the Argentina national team in the World Cup victory in Qatar and was recognized as the best young player of the tournament.
