FIAS President Shestakov: Makhachev did not trust wrestling as everyone expected

MOSCOW, February 12 – RIA Novosti, Oleg Bogatov. Vasily Shestakov, President of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), noted that Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Islam Makhachev did not trust his wrestling techniques, as expected, during his championship fight with Australian Alexander Volkanovski.

Makhachev took over from Volkanovski and defended the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight title for the first time. The bout was run by UFC 284 in Perth, Australia, with all five rounds gone. The Russian won by unanimous decision.

“It wasn’t as much a clash of style as a clash of wits and characters fighting. I think the Russian sambo wrestler outperformed an experienced Australian because of tactics and psychology. He didn’t trust wrestling as everyone expected him to. He also proved that he can maintain stamina and high concentration throughout the entire minute, and that’s very difficult.”

Makhachev is 31 years old, he has 24 wins and one loss. The Russian continues their streak of 12 wins. Volkanovski, 34, who continues to hold the UFC featherweight belt, has 25 wins and two losses.
