Pal Schmitt and Richard Pound elected honorary members of the IOC
MOSCOW, May 20 – RIA Novosti, Andrey Simonenko. Former Hungarian president, Olympic fencing champion Pal Schmitt, and Canadian Richard Pound, former head of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), have been named honorary members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Voting took place on Friday at the IOC meeting in Lausanne.
Schmitt won two Olympic gold medals (1968, 1972) in team epee tournaments and also won two world championships. After the end of his sports career, Schmitt held various administrative positions, notably the chairman of the Hungarian National Olympic Committee (NOC) and also engaged in political activities. He served as President of Hungary from 2010 to 2012.
Pound competed in swimming at the Olympics. After finishing his career, he moved into administrative jobs, he was president of the Canadian NOC. He became WADA’s first president in 1999. In 2015, he prepared a report on the doping scandal in Russian athletics, after which the All-Russian Athletic Federation (ARAF) was deprived of its status as a full member of the World Athletic Association (then World Athletics – IAAF). and Russian athletes were allowed to participate in international competitions only in neutral status. He is currently the Dean of the IOC and has been in the organization since 1978.
