Doctor Ferrangen says more than 50% of Norwegian skiers use asthma medication

MOSCOW, March 3 – RIA Novosti. National team doctor Uwe Verangen said that 50 to 70 percent of Norwegian athletes who participated in the Scandinavian World Ski Championships held in Planica, Slovenia were diagnosed with asthma and used medication for the disease.

Ferrangen said the number of Norwegian skiers taking asthma medication under a therapeutic exception has not changed for several years.

Quoted by VG, Ferangena said: “We can’t give a specific figure, but if you look at sports where endurance is essential, both in cross-country skiing and other sports, especially in the winter, then that’s pretty accurate.” .

An early study of the effects of asthma medications on athletes at the University Hospital in Ulm, Germany, showed that these drugs can help improve the performance of athletes by two to three percent in competitions lasting 60 to 90 minutes. According to study leader Juergen Steinaker, the difference is “huge” and can make the difference between winning and losing.

Ferrangen is skeptical about the results of the German study and Steinacker’s findings. “This is a topic that has been studied from the beginning, and previous studies have shown that giving inhalants to healthy people has no effect on improving their performance. However, if there are new studies that show something different, then naturally the Norwegian National Team doctor, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) said it should pay attention to this.

Previously, WADA had limited the use of salbutamol and formoterol, two commonly used bronchodilator drugs for athletes with asthma. Exceeding these limits may result in disqualification.
