Post: Defeat on Neva: new star Tutberidze wins Russian Grand Prix Final

The finals of the Russian Grand Prix in figure skating will take place on Sunday in St. It ended in St. Petersburg. Her main heroine was Adelia Petrosyan, who won the women’s singles skating. The group’s 15-year-old star, Eteri Tutberidze, beat the strongest figure skaters in the country by a large margin, including Olympic champion Kamila Valieva, former world champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and Russian champion Sofia Akatieva.

Adelia Petrosyan was not included in the list of participants of the Russian Grand Prix Final, as she played only one stage of the series. But after the silver medalists of the 2022 Olympics, Alexandra Trusova and Ksenia Sinitsyna, withdrew from the competition by decision of the Russian Figure Skating Federation, Petrosyan was included in a dozen people who had the opportunity to speak in the final (except competitions in show programs) tournament season.

At the Russian Championship, which was held in Krasnoyarsk more than two months ago, Petrosyan took only fifth place. However, he should have been considered one of the gold contenders in St. Petersburg. According to the testimonies of those who saw the official training before and during the Russian Grand Prix Final, Petrosyan prepared very well. Specifically, he almost flawlessly rolled a four-lap somersault—the second hardest jump ever performed by a figure skater. Also, Petrosyan planned to put on two quadruped sheepskin coats and a triple axle in a free program.

All competitors of this figure skater were initially inferior in complexity of technical content. Russian champion Sofia Akatieva planned to perform the set closest to her – two quadruple sheepskin coats and two triple axles. Kamila Valieva, the winner of the 2022 Olympics team tournament, restored her four-round sheepskin coat this season, but her triple-ax stubbornly did not go away. Former world champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva was accustomed to hitting the axes in three and a half rounds in a row, but for a very long time there was no mention of the quad sheepskin. Finally, Sofia Muravyova also currently only has a triple axle.

And after the short program it became clear that Petrosyan is the obvious favorite of this tournament. She performed cleanly with the triple ax and scored more than four points from Tuktamysheva. Third place in the interim, 6.65 points behind, was Valieva, who did not want to give up the triple ax risk that ended in a decline. “I see no reason not to, this is not the Olympic Games, although I went to all the content out there, it’s very good training,” the skater said, expressing his perseverance. However, Akatieva, who fell from the same jump, was nine points behind Petrosyan.

The next day it turned out that Valieva’s words about risk were valid only for the short program. In an arbitrary application, the Olympic champion already did not have a triple ax. But there were two quadruple sheepskins. Whether the skater could complete the most challenging post-Olympic season for him on the podium was primarily dependent on his performances. And, of course, from the performance of competitors, because all six of the most powerful ultra-c elements were announced for the free program.

Valieva’s risk is no longer a show of strength: why is the champion falling?

Akatieva made the first bid for victory. She landed two triple Axels and the first quadruple finger loop cleanly (except for a slight low spin). But the second quad was unsuccessful – the skater could not get rid of it and only through desperate efforts managed to avoid the fall. Still, the score was strong – almost 165 points. This amount effectively banned all competitors speaking after him from making mistakes.

Akatieva – the first figure skater to skate after Sofia Muravyova, could not show her program one hundred percent. He realized a triple axle and replaced the next with a double. As a result, student Evgeni Plushenko remained behind the champion of Russia. After the ice, Valieva arrived and began to roll in two open-quad sheepskin coats. But they took too much power from the skater who fell ill at the beginning of the year, and the second half of the program was slow and declining on the triple lutz. The Olympic champion lost to Akatieva in the free program, but was ahead by 0.67 points overall.

No matter how microscopic this gap was, Tuktamysheva’s notes, speaking later, could fit into it. After the fact, we can say: if the former world champion had performed the second triple axel without a step and managed without a minimum of lower turns in the loop, she would have been higher than Valieva. But these two blemishes caused him to bring himself to the table behind the Olympic champion. And the reserve after the short program allowed Akatieva not to get into the top three.

Petrosyan, on the other hand, with the first two quadruple jumps – a crotch and a sheepskin coat – actually cleared all questions about the champion of the Russian Grand Prix Final. And neither the “Joker” spot on the third quad, nor the triple ax falling from the ax changed the situation. The rising star of the group, Eteri Tutberidze, shined brightly in this tournament. Valieva was more than 13 points ahead of Tuktamysheva and Akatieva, leaving no doubt about her absolute superiority in these competitions. This too will likely be a springboard for dominance in later seasons.

“Vostok” brought good luck to Kaganovskaya and Angelopol

In ice dancing, the composition of the Russian Grand Prix Final was shortened as much as possible, as it could be based on the results of the series stages. National champions Elizaveta Khudaiberdiyeva and Yegor Bazin withdrew from the tournament. Due to the collapse, the duets Annabel Morozova / David Narizhny and Irina Khavronina / Dario Chirizano played in St. Petersburg could not be reached. Finally, one day before the start, it was learned that the bronze medalists of the Russian Championship, Elizaveta Pasechnik and Maxim Nekrasov, refused to participate due to medical reasons.

However, Vasilisa Kaganovskaya and Valery Angelopol, who had passed their first adult years, returned to duty. After a brilliant first half of the season, they missed the Russian championship due to the illness of their partner. It is unlikely that such a long break in the competition will allow us to consider them the favorites of the Russian Grand Prix Final. But after the rhythmic dance, Kaganovskaya and Angelopol were only 0.45 points behind the silver medalists of the national championship, Elizaveta Shanaeva and Pavel Drozd, which meant that the fight for victory in the free dance would almost begin again.

The free staging of Kaganovskaya and Angelopol on an oriental theme is estimated by experts as one of the best of this season. As a result, the reviewers agreed with this assessment. Shanaeva and Drozd also performed their free dance visually flawless, but sitting in the “corner of tears and kisses”, seeing their second place on the scoreboard in this tournament, they reacted with visible disappointment. Sofia Tyutyunina and Andrey Bagin took third place in the Russian Grand Prix Final.

Lutz disappoints Olympic champions

In pair skating, the top three winners of the Russian Grand Prix Final and the national championship were predicted. The question was only about the distribution of medals among the three strongest couples in the country. In Krasnoyarsk, they settled in the national championship as follows – Alexandra Boykova / Dmitry Kozlovsky, Anastasia Mishina / Alexander Gallyamov, Evgenia Tarasova / Vladimir Morozov.

Petersburg at the end of January, Mishina and Gallyamov supposedly took revenge on Boikova and Kozlovsky for their defeat in the Russian championship. However, it was clear that the winners of the Olympic team tournament would make every effort to prove their superiority with an initially higher status. For this, they tried to perform a parallel triple lutz again in the short program, but unlike the city championship, the run ended in failure. Boikova took the intermediate lead, and Kozlovsky, Tarasova and Morozov were behind them with minimal delay.

In the free program, Mishina and Gallyamov no longer take risks with Lutz and have scored almost 160 points playing their standard set of techniques for this season. Tarasova and Morozov did not reach such a level, as they had already made serious mistakes in the first jump elements. But Boikova and Kozlovsky managed to get by with minimal stigma. The Russian champions lost to free patent Mishina and Gallyamov, but won on the sum of the two programs. Tarasova and Morozov, silver medalists of the 2022 Olympics, remained third.

Mark Kondratyuk’s stunning return to the men’s singles short program was marked. The Olympic Team Tournament winner, who had not been able to perform fully since the end of November due to a back injury, put on a clean performance with two quadruple jumps and scored 100 points. Petr Gumennik and Makar Ignatov approached this goal. And the main disappointment of the first day of the tournament was Dmitry Aliev, who took the penultimate 11th place.

The work on mistakes made by the European champion 2020 gave results – speaking in the first group of participants of the free program, Aliyev scored a strong 195.60 points by Russian single skating standards. In the end, none of the participants in the Russian Grand Prix Final reached this level. Thanks to the reserve after the short program, only Gumennik managed to bypass Aliyev in the final protocol. He became the champion of the tournament. Bronze went to Kondratyuk. Speaking against the backdrop of the consequences of the disease, Champion of Russia Evgeny Semenenko remained in fourth place.
