Infantino: If the Italian team does not make it to the World Cup, we will increase the number of teams to 128
MOSCOW, March 16 – RIA Novosti. Gianni Infantino, President of the International Football Federation (FIFA), jokingly said that if the Italian team does not qualify for the World Cup and there are 64 participants in the tournament, the number of teams will have to be increased to 128.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico and will be the first trophy to feature 48 teams. The Italians failed to enter the last two world championships held in Russia and Qatar with the participation of 32 teams. The team is the reigning European champion.
“There are a lot of teams that can play quality football. We saw surprises at this World Cup – for example, Japan beat Germany, but it wasn’t that surprising to me because these teams have serious quality players. Of course, more teams, more celebrations and more means more quality.”
