Ovechkin breaks Gretzky’s NHL season record with 40 league goals
MOSCOW, March 22 – RIA Novosti. Russian forward and Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin set a new regular season National Hockey League (NHL) record with 40 or more goals scored.
In the championship game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Russian scored an abandoned puck, bringing the number of goals to 40 in the 2022/23 season. The current NHL tie for Ovechkin is 18th and 13th in his career. The Washington striker threw 40 or more discs. The 37-year-old Russian striker became the first player in league history to achieve this feat. The old record for most NHL seasons with 40 or more goals was held by Wayne Gretzky (12 seasons).
Alexander Ovechkin is in second place in the list of the best scorers in the history of the NHL championship (820 goals). Wayne Gretzky is the league record holder with 894 goals.
