FIFA U-20 World Cup draw canceled after Israel call for disqualification
MOSCOW, March 27 – RIA Novosti. According to the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI), the FIFA U-20 World Cup draw held in Indonesia was canceled a few days after Bali Governor Wayan Koster called for Israel to be banned from the competition.
Indonesia and Israel do not have official diplomatic relations, the countries cannot find common ground on Palestine. Koster had previously asked Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amalie, to ban the Israeli football team from participating in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scheduled to be held on the island in May-June 2023.
According to Arya Sinulinggi, member of the association’s board of directors, it is not possible to draw lots without one of the participating teams. Sinulingga added that the U-20 World Cup issue could lead to Indonesia being penalized by FIFA because the country initially volunteered to host the tournament with all the results.
FIFA banned Indonesia from international football for a year in 2015 due to government interference with PSSI.
