Table Tennis Federation welcomes decision to allow Russians to compete

st. PETERSBURG, March 30 – RIA Novosti, Dmitry Edigarev. The Russian Table Tennis Federation (FNTR) welcomes the decision of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to allow Russian athletes to participate in international competitions, FNTR vice president Roman Markov told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, the ITTF had stated that it was ready to allow Russian athletes to compete in May, subject to all recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Committee. The ITTF suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions in March 2022. The organization states that the current sanctions against Russia and Belarus will continue during the review of this decision.

“We are in contact with the ITTF. The letter says they are ready to take us to the Olympics. You need to get rating points to qualify there. There is hope but what will happen next is unclear. We are the first to let our athletes go. We will consult to understand,” he said.

On Tuesday, the IOC Executive Committee recommended that international federations allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who do not support the CBO to participate in international competitions as neutral athletes, while recommending that teams from Russia should not be accepted as participants in international competitions in team sports. The IOC Executive Board also recommended that athletes affiliated with the armed forces or security agencies not be allowed to compete.
