Ilgar Mammadov confident that Russian fencers will restore world leadership
KAZAN, March 31 – RIA Novosti, Vadim Kuznetsov. The President of the Russian Fencing Federation, Ilgar Mammadov, said the International Olympic Committee understands that it will weaken the Russian team by not allowing Russian athletes affiliated with the armed forces and security services to participate in international competitions.
Previously, the IOC had recommended that international federations allow the Russians, who did not support the special operation as neutral athletes, to begin. At the same time, the organization recommends that athletes affiliated with the armed forces and security services not be allowed to compete.
Mammadov said he is confident that Russian fencing will return to the pinnacle of world sport once athletes are allowed to participate in international competitions.
“The return of the Russian fencers to the world stage will be victorious. We were world leaders, but we became ghosts. Now we are nowhere. Our last tournament was in February 2022, a year later our rating was reset. Once we start, Mammadov, suddenly our future will be difficult. But we will regain our positions and become the world leader. “When that will happen is a question,” he said.
