Tarasova: I don’t care if the Ukrainians want to compete with us, it’s their right
MOSCOW, April 1 – RIA Novosti, Vasily Bogdanov. Honored coach of the USSR in figure skating Tatyana Tarasova told RIA Novosti that the Russians should not care if Ukrainian athletes want to participate in the same competitions as them.
Oleg Nemchinov, previously a member of the executive committee of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, said that the country’s government has decided to ban Ukrainian athletes from participating in the qualifying competitions for the 2024 Olympics, in which Russian athletes will participate. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) responded by saying that the boycott contradicted the position of many Ukrainian athletes and members of the Ukrainian Olympic community and would only harm Ukrainian sport.
On Tuesday, March 28, the IOC recommended that international federations allow the Russians, who do not support the special operation as neutral athletes, to begin. At the same time, the organization recommends that athletes affiliated with the armed forces and security services not be allowed to compete. It was also decided that teams from Russia and Belarus cannot be accepted as participants in international competitions.
