Thieves stole 1980 Olympic gold medal from Italian high jumper Simeoni
ROME, May 10 – RIA Novosti. Italian state television reported on Wednesday evening that Rai was the victim of thieves who stole elite Italian athlete Sara Simeoni’s gold medal in the high jump at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
According to media reports, the crime was committed on Saturday. When Simeoni, 70, returned to his home in the northern town of Rivoli Veronese, he found that the thieves were there. The attackers took valuables, including an Olympic gold medal. It was this loss that particularly upset the famous high jumper, who held the national record in this type of athletics for 36 years until 2007.
In this context, La Gazzetta dello Sport points out that Simeoni’s victory in Moscow is of great importance for all women’s athletics in Italy. This was the second Olympic gold for an Italian athlete after Ondina Valla won the 80m hurdles at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
