Halep says there is no evidence in disqualification case
MOSCOW, September 19 – RIA Novosti. Former world number one Romanian tennis player Simona Halep said there was no evidence of her guilt in the anti-doping rule violation case.
The Tennis Injury Authority (ITIA) announced on September 12 that Halep would be suspended until October 6, 2026 for violating anti-doping rules. The athlete plans to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
“I was literally shocked when I got the decision. I couldn’t believe that they sentenced me to a 4-year suspension even though there was contamination in the sample and the blood was absolutely normal. They didn’t find anything wrong with my blood. It’s crazy that they made such a decision based only on the data provided by my lawyers. I was tried according to the scenarios.” There is no evidence. It’s just crazy,” the athlete is quoted as saying. Front Office Sports.
In October 2022, Halep was temporarily suspended from competition for an anti-doping rule violation. The Romanian athlete’s doping test, conducted while competing at the US Open in August, came back positive for the banned drug roxadustat. The athlete stated that he had never thought about doping in his life. In May, the ITIA filed additional charges against Halep regarding violations in the athlete’s biological passport.
Halep is 31 years old. She won 24 singles tournaments under the auspices of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). The tennis player became the champion of Roland Garros (2018) and Wimbledon (2019). The Romanian player became the third tennis player in history to win more than $40 million in prize money.
