Following the departure of Hansi Flick and the arrival of Rudi Völler, the DFB is said to have reached an agreement with Julian Nagelsmann. According to the media, he must lead the DFB team to the European Championship in 2024.
According to information from “Bild” and “Kicker”, Julian Nagelsmann will be the new national football coach. In the statement made on Tuesday, it was said that the German Football Federation agreed in principle to work with the 36-year-old former Bayern coach until the European Championship to be played in 2024. All that remains is for the final details to be clarified.
Neuendorf: “In good conversation”
The German Football Federation announced that DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Rudi Völler held their first meeting with Nagelsmann on Tuesday. Neuendorf explained: “We are in good discussions.” Nagelsmann will replace Hansi Flick, from whom the association left on September 10 due to continued failure. The DFB team had lost 4-1 in its third consecutive match against Japan the previous evening.
Nagelsmann was relieved of his duties in Munich during an international break last March. Reports continue that his current contract in Munich should be terminated and that he will join the DFB on a free transfer. In the 2–1 win against France in Dortmund on 12 September, sporting director Völler temporarily took over as team boss alongside Hannes Wolf and former international Sandro Wagner during a brief return to the German bench. The 63-year-old had described it as a “one-off” assignment before the match and reiterated the urgency of the search for a national coach.
Nagelsmann should be relieved of his World Cup burden
On October 9, the national team will fly to North America for two international matches against the USA and Mexico. This is followed by a match against Austria at the end of the year. Alpine Republic has been coached since June 2022 by Ralf Rangnick, who has been a big supporter of Nagelsmann’s coaching career in Leipzig. The DFB selection with Flick had already failed in the qualifying round for the World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022; This year, they have only won once in six matches, against Peru, which they won 2-0.
Völler spoke of a “World Cup burden” that Flick could not shake. Immediately following the disastrous defeat against Japan, speculation emerged regarding a number of names, including Jürgen Klopp’s almost eternal dream solution, being linked to Liverpool FC. Nagelsmann had not yet found a new club. The money issue was obvious because the record champions were contractually bound to a well-paid work permit. It was previously stated that an agreement was possible between the DFB and Bayern, which is in a financially difficult situation.
