Categories

German volleyball players achieve their next success in the Olympic qualifiers. After the 3-1 victory against world champions Italy, the road to Paris is almost complete.

German volleyball players unexpectedly disappointed world champions Italy in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Rio de Janeiro and took a giant step towards Paris. Less than 24 hours after the blow to the hosts Brazil, national coach Michal Winiarski’s team defeated the favorite team 3-1 (26:24, 18:25, 25:20, 25:23). This was the fourth win in the fourth match.

The starting position is excellent due to the outstanding success. The selection of the German Volleyball Association (DVV) is twelve points ahead of the previous leader Italy (9), followed by Cuba (6) and Brazil (5), who have played one match less each.

Volleyball player without Captain Kampa

Even though they were without captain Lukas Kampa, who could no longer play in the tournament due to a calf injury, the German team made a strong start. The DVV team initially missed three set points but kept their cool and won the first round 26:24.

After the Italians equalized with a score of 1-1, Grozer and Co. took the third set and dominated the fourth set, using their second match point.

Before the success against the Brazilians, the DVV team had already won the first two matches against Iran and Cuba. The other opponents in Group A, the Czech Republic (Saturday/13.30), Qatar (Sunday/1.30) and Ukraine (Sunday/22.00) are eligible.

Second place is enough for the Olympics

The best two teams in three groups of eight will qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games; The host France will be the seed. A German selection was last represented at the Summer Games in London in 2012.

If Germany cannot enter one of the top two places, it still has a chance to enter the world rankings. German women, who finished the qualifying tournament in fifth place, also hope for this.
