Former FIFA president Blatter refused to testify in court due to his health condition
MOSCOW, June 8 – RIA Novosti. Former FIFA president Joseph Blatter did not testify in court on Wednesday due to chest pain.
On Wednesday, a court in Switzerland began examining the case in which Blatter and former European Football Association (UEFA) president Michel Platini were accused of fraud. They face up to five years in prison or a large fine. Blatter’s statement was to be taken on Wednesday, and Platini on Thursday.
Prior to that, 86-year-old Blatter wanted a break and, with the help of his daughter, left the meeting room.
In the fall of 2015, the Swiss Federal Bureau of Justice filed a lawsuit against Blatter, who was then FIFA president, on suspicion of illegally transferring 2 million Swiss Francs to Platini in 2011. Blatter was also accused of selling the TV rights to the Caribbean Football Association (CFU) to show the 2010 and 2014 World Cups for $600,000 at well below market value. Blatter was suspended, and on December 21, 2015, the arbitration chamber of the FIFA ethics committee suspended him for eight years. On February 24, 2016, the FIFA Appeals Committee reduced the time limit to six years. In 2021, Blatter was suspended for another 6 years and 8 months for violating FIFA ethics.
