MOSCOW, November 13 – RIA Novosti. According to the BBC, Prince William of Wales and former Manchester United head coach Alex Ferguson attended the farewell ceremony for world champion Bobby Charlton, a member of the England football team.

Also attending the ceremony were Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) President Alexander Ceferin, England head coach Gareth Southgate, former United players Andy Cole, Paul Scholes, Peter Schmeichel, Alex Stepney, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and other club representatives.

On the way to Manchester Cathedral, the funeral cortege passed Old Trafford stadium, where the Charlton monument is erected.

Charlton, the 1966 World Cup champion, died on October 18, aged 86. He lived in a nursing home that cared for people with dementia. According to media reports, Charlton died from the consequences of the injury he received after crashing into a window sill. During the examination, it was learned that the former football player lost his balance while getting up from the chair a few days before his death. The coroner listed the causes of death as lung damage, a fall and dementia.

Charlton played for Manchester United from 1956 to 1973 and also represented English Preston North End, Waterford, Newcastle, Australian Perth Azzurri and Blacktown City. He later coached Preston and Wigan. Charlton made 758 appearances for Manchester United and scored 249 goals. With the Red Devils, he became a three-time English champion, won the English Super Cup twice, the FA Cup once and the Champions Cup.

As part of the England team, he won the World Cup on home soil in 1966 and won a bronze medal at the European Championships in 1968. In 1966, Charlton won the Golden Ball, the best player of the year award, and was also recognized. The football player, who was chosen as the best player of the 1966 World Cup, survived the plane crash in Munich in February 1958, carrying Manchester United players, in which 23 people lost their lives. Charlton was knighted in 1994.
