Post: Has CSKA come back to win? KHL play-offs started with “cracker” Fedotov

CSKA dryly beat Lokomotiv in the first match of the KHL play-off series

The next play-off matches have started in the Kontinental Hockey League. The first match day of the Gagarin Cup was celebrated with four matches and a lot of excitement. About the main events at the beginning of the first round of the tournament – in the material of RIA Novosti Sport.

“Traktor” nearly shot himself in the foot

The game day started with the match in Ufa, where local Salavat Yulaev hosted Chelyabinsk Traktor. According to all predictions, the Ufa team is the favorite of the match. Even unconditionally, according to some observers. However, in the first match of the series, Viktor Kozlov’s team stumbled.

Traktor opened the scoring in the fifth minute of the match, and in the middle of the second period the Chelyabinsk team doubled their advantage with a powerful shot from Albert Yarullin. Even Alexander Samonov did not help Salavat. The Ufa goalkeeper, who is called the best goalkeeper of the 2023/24 season by many, could not prove how reliable he is. The discipline also disappointed the home team: Towards the end of the first 20 minutes, Danil Alalykin managed to receive a five-minute penalty for his attack on the head and neck area.

The chances of “SY” returning to the game seemed questionable, but Kozlov’s team still managed to pull it off. Largely thanks to the rival. After Danila Bashkirov’s goal at the end of the second period, Traktor’s technical team for some reason requested an intervention on the goalkeeper, which was not even close. As a result, the goal was considered good and the Chelyabinsk team received a minor penalty for delaying the game. The minority of guests agreed again. The result of the match would have been dramatic in any case, but “Traktor” made a bigger impact and took the victory. With less than three minutes left in normal time, Grigory Dronov gave the Chelyabinsk team an important victory at the beginning of the series.

“Lokomotiv” was afraid of CSKA again

One of the main events of the first round of the KHL play-offs is the fight between Lokomotiv and CSKA. For the fourth season in a row, the Yaroslavl “railway workers” faced the army team and each time lost to the Moscow club, so Loko is already stereotyped as a team that is afraid of CSKA. Although Igor Nikitin and his players said otherwise, a new argument in favor of this view emerged in their first head-to-head match in the series.

After the first period, in which CSKA was ahead 2-0, everything became clear about the results of the match. Finally, the army team revealed to them people who are usually called team leaders. They were mostly overshadowed throughout the regular season but became an immediate hit at the start of the playoffs. Mikhail Grigorenko opened the scoring and Anton Slepyshev increased the score. With Nikita Nesterov and Vitaly Abramov scoring double points in the second period, Lokomotiv even theoretically lost its chance to return to the game.

Along with the brilliant performance of the leaders, Ivan Fedotov also gave a less fiery performance. The CSKA goalkeeper, who became one of the main news producers of Russian hockey before the season even started, was criticized not only by the lazy throughout the season. But today all the critics were silent. 38 saves and a strong shutout in the first elimination game! Probably all CSKA fans were expecting such a comeback from the best goalkeeper of the 2021/22 season.

Spartak beat Severstal in the opener but almost missed out on victory

As expected, the most productive match took place in the capital of Russia, where the brightest and most aggressive KHL clubs met. Spartak and Severstal scored 436 goals between them in the regular season. They hit the ropes in the first head-to-head match.

In the middle of the first period, the scoreboard showed 3-0 in favor of the red-whites. The main unit of Spartak, which, according to many, was the best in the entire league, showed itself strongly. First Pavel Poryadin scored against the Severstal goalkeeper with a neat pass from Nikolai Goldobin, then Goldie assisted Egor Savikov and then Michal Czajkowski put the ball past Alexander Samoilov. Spartak’s advantage in terms of play and score was undeniable. But not before the away team got a goal back.

Kirill Pilipenko’s goal gave Andrei Kozyrev’s team a significant impetus during the remaining two regular periods, during which Spartak had to be sent off multiple times. The constant game of the minority completely disrupted the “red-white” rhythm and added more work to Dmitry Nikolaev. The goalkeeper of the Muscovites made many elegant saves. It was his play that allowed Spartak to avoid fiasco. He missed only two of 31 shots and made a big bid to become the team’s full-fledged starting goalkeeper throughout the entire playoffs.

Shipachev did not save Ak Bars from failure

Perhaps the main sensation of the game day was presented by Avtomobilist. On the eve of the start of the series, “Ak Bars” finally removed Dmitry Yashkin from the injured list. However, Kazan’s star striker had to miss the first match of the match.

Maybe Yashkin’s skill wasn’t enough for Ak Bars. Especially at the opening of the meeting. The Kazan team obviously failed in the first period and conceded two goals in a row. Sergei Shirokov celebrated the 800th game of his KHL career with a spectacular goal after an accurate shot from a tight angle, followed by Nick Ebert. However, towards the end of the meeting, Vadim Shipachev converted the majority, but the goal of the top scorer in the KHL of our time was not enough to save Ak Bars.
