Spain drops bid to host 2030 Winter Olympics
MOSCOW, June 21 – RIA Novosti. According to the organisation’s website, the Spanish National Olympic Committee (NOC) has refused to apply for the 2030 Winter Olympics due to disagreements between Aragon and Catalonian officials.
The decision was adopted unanimously at the Spanish NOC General Assembly. It was noted that the parties could not reach an agreement on the interregional distribution of sports competitions. The NOC has informed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that Spain plans to continue working with the Games Commission to host the Winter Games in the country at a later date.
Earlier, the authorities of Catalonia announced that a single application has been submitted to host the Winter Olympic Games. The region said the joint bid with Aragon was “dead” and the province had to fight alone to host the 2030 Games.
The host city of the 2030 Winter Olympics will be announced at the 140th session of the IOC, held in Mumbai, India in 2023.
Canadian Vancouver and Whistler, Japanese Sapporo, and American Salt Lake City have all announced their desire to host the 2030 Olympics.
