Post: Season canceled and no champions

Football has not been played in Ukraine since Russia’s war of aggression. The league has now decided to end the season completely. Master is not chosen.

The Ukrainian football league was canceled at the end of the season due to the Russian occupation. Ukrainian Premier Liha announced that all 16 clubs in the senior football division have accepted this decision. The standings on February 24 are final for the 2021/22 season and no champion will be crowned. Since this date marking Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, league operations have already been suspended.

After 18 match days, series champion Shakhtar Donetsk (47 points) took the lead, ahead of last year’s champion Dinamo Kyiv (45). Both major clubs are currently playing a series of charity matches at top European clubs to raise money for Ukraine and draw attention to the situation at home. The advantage match played between Borussia Dortmund and Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday evening (2:3) brought about 400,000 Euros.

The Ukrainian football federation UAF suspended the match after the Russian invasion on February 24 and the declaration of martial law in Ukraine. The league was originally supposed to resume with a match between relegation contenders FK Minaj and fourth-placed Sorja Luhansk on 25 February after the winter break.

East Ukrainian clubs play their home matches away from home.

Teams like Sorja Luhansk or Shakhtar Donetsk hail from areas of eastern Ukraine that have been controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 2014. Since then, clubs have no longer trained and played in their own stadiums, but in other cities. Shakhtar recently played home matches at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, while Sorje Luhansk is playing in southern Ukraine.
