Mertens beat Kerber to advance to the fourth round of Wimbledon

MOSCOW, 1 July – RIA Novosti. 24th seeded Belgian tennis player Elise Mertens defeated German Angelique Kerber (seeded 15) to advance to the fourth round of the Wimbledon tournament.

The match ended 6:4, 7:5 in favor of the Belgian. Tennis players spent 1 hour and 20 minutes on the court.

In the next round, Mertens will face world number two Ounce Jaber from Tunisia.

Also in the fourth round of Wimbledon came Czech tennis player Maria Bouzkova, who defeated the American Alison Riske 6:2, 6:3. To reach the quarterfinals, she will compete with the winner of the match Caroline Garcia (France) – Zhang Shuai (China, 33).

Held on grass courts, Wimbledon will end on July 10. In April, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) did not allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players to participate in the tournament due to the situation in Ukraine. By contrast, in May, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) decided not to award ranking points to competitors.
