CAS rejects request for expulsion of RFU and Russian clubs from international competitions
Our football hoped that the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) would give a fair decision, but rejected all Russian applications for the removal of national teams and clubs. Russian football was sent to the bottom, where it will suffer for years of deterioration and a lot of pain.
expectations shattered
Everything looked relatively good for our football in February. The ambitious team of Valery Karpin was preparing to enter the World Cup in Qatar with the play-offs, once Spartak reached the playoffs of the European Cup, the distribution of talented football players appeared in Dynamo, Zenit finally looked good on the international stage. .
But the political situation changed everything. In March, UEFA and FIFA made a joint decision to exclude Russia from international competition due to Russia’s removal from the play-offs to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and Spartak Moscow lost the opportunity to play. 1/8 final in the Europa League.
Of course, the leadership of our football did not agree with these decisions. All decisions were appealed to the CAS, but the Sports Court quickly refused to hear these cases. As a result, neither Spartak nor the Russian team could participate in international matches. Then our clubs and national teams were also suspended for the next season.
CAS motivation is embarrassing but true
Everyone was eagerly waiting for the final decision of CAS. It finally came out on July 15, but unfortunately only brought pain and suffering to Russian football. All objections were dismissed. The CAS Commission found that the escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the worldwide public and government response, created “unforeseen and unprecedented circumstances to which FIFA and UEFA must respond”.
Once again, it all ended in a politically biased statement. CAS has openly admitted that our clubs and teams are in no way responsible for what is going on in the world, but the court could not do otherwise. Again in tennis, hockey, judo and other martial arts, they cover themselves with safety issues, although there are examples where our athletes perform calmly and do not threaten the safety of anyone.
What we gonna do later?
But it’s all poetry. The fact is that Russian football was sent on a journey to the bottom. It is clear that the disqualification may extend for years and will affect the level of our football. Without European cups, European and world championships, we risk a very serious setback. Disruption will be inevitable, the task of the leaders of Russian sports is to minimize it. Can they? There are questions here.
The work is really going on, the Russian Cup final and the Super Cup match turned out to be commercially bright, but it is not very clear how much it will be possible to maintain such a level of organization and interest in Russian football. . But no one will be under illusions anymore, they will focus on real work.
