Dave Limp, Amazon’s senior vice president of Devices and Services, reached out to employees in his department this Wednesday to justify the layoffs. According to reports, the group is looking to lay off about 10,000 people. Limp did not confirm the number, but only mentioned a consolidation.

The Amazon executive referred to an “unconventional and uncertain macroeconomic environment.” “After extensive review, we have recently decided to merge a number of teams and programs.”

One of the consequences of these decisions is that some functions are no longer needed.

“It pains me to announce this news as we know it will mean losing talented Amazonians from the Devices and Services organization.”

Voice assistant and AI areas affected

Affected employees were personally briefed on Tuesday. Limp announced that they will support each individual and help them find a new job. Employees who can no longer be employed at Amazon must receive a severance package, transitional rights, and outside support along with job placement.

Around 1.6 million people worldwide work at Amazon, and most of them work in the online retail giant’s fulfillment centers. The department, which deals with voice assistant Alexa, smart Echo speakers and artificial intelligence applications, is particularly affected by the cuts. According to the estimations of people in the industry, this field is running short.

So far, Amazon leadership’s expectations that online orders will increasingly be processed via Alexa and an Echo device have yet to be met.
