“Hive” blackmailed companies and organizations on a large scale. Now the network is broken. ZDFheute explains the background.
The global hacker network “Hive” has been crashed. This was reported on Thursday by the Reutlingen police, the Stuttgart prosecutor and the US Department of Justice.
Baden-Württemberg Justice Minister Marion Gentges said that “a major blow against organized cybercrime” was successful. How important is it really? ZDFtoday clarifies the most important questions.
What is “The Hive” anyway?
“Hive” is a network that exposes malware called ransomware. Criminals use them to restrict or block access to company data and systems. They then demanded a ransom for his release. Blackmail tools have been developed for this purpose in order to put pressure on victims by publishing sensitive data.
Since mid-2021, more than 1,500 companies worldwide have been hacked in this way, including 70 in Germany. More than 100 million US dollars are said to have been stolen.
