Politico: Europe turns off street lights to combat energy crisis

MOSCOW, September 16 – RIA Novosti. Europe is trying to save energy by turning off the lighting on the facades of public buildings, author Political newspaper.

The publication explained what measures were taken by different countries due to the sharp increase in prices after the imposition of sanctions against Russia.

Therefore, in Germany they adopted a new law on electricity saving, which puts a temporary ban on lighting attractions. German regions, which are most dependent on Russian gas, are struggling to find solutions to reduce consumption. For example, in Hannover, they switched to cold showers in all public institutions.

Spain has also imposed a curfew and now shops have to turn off the lights at exactly 22:00.

The lights on the Eiffel Tower in Paris were also turned off an hour earlier than usual. In addition, it is stated that street lighting is completely or partially turned off at night in 12 thousand French communes.

In addition, the French authorities have launched an “energy sourcing” program to reduce electricity consumption by ten percent. Some businesses, including two major glassmakers Duralex and Arc, said they’ve already cut production and placed a few workers in part-time jobs.

The soaring bills also led to the closure of several dozen swimming pools, including the largest Pailleron sports complex in Paris, according to the release notes.

Earlier on Wednesday, European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans acknowledged that prices remained high and that authorities did not have the capacity to address this issue quickly. He also noted that the winter will be difficult in EU countries.

The West increased the pressure of sanctions on Russia for its special operation against Ukraine. Later this led to an increase in electricity, fuel and food prices in European countries.

Vladimir Putin previously stated that the policy of controlling and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy for the West and that the sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
