Niiniste said the threat of Russian troops outside Ukraine is unlikely
WASHINGTON, September 25 – RIA Novosti. Finnish President Sauli Niinistö declarationHe said he saw no threat that Russia would start hostilities “neither now nor in the near future” outside of Ukraine.
“I think he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) has enough headaches in Ukraine. It doesn’t seem very obvious that he could do any maneuvers elsewhere. Not now, not in the near future,” he said in an interview with CNN.
Finland itself, on the backdrop of the Ukrainian conflict, abandoned its long-term neutrality and applied to join NATO together with neighboring Sweden.
Niinistö noted that the situation on the Finland-Russia border is calmer than before.
“We didn’t see any signs of (tension) in Finland. In fact, (the border) is calmer than it has been in a few years,” he said.
