State Department: US believes Snowden should return to the country and be tried

WASHINGTON, September 26 – RIA Novosti. State Department spokesman Ned Price said that former US intelligence officer Edward Snowden, who received Russian citizenship, should return to the US to face trial.

“Our position has not changed: Mr Snowden must return to the United States to face trial like any other US citizen,” Price said at a briefing.

According to a State Department spokesperson, Washington continues to consider Snowden a US citizen despite publicly declaring that he has renounced his citizenship. At the same time, Price suggested that with the granting of Russian citizenship, Snowden could be mobilized to participate in a special operation in Ukraine. This assumption has already been rejected by Snowden’s attorney, Anatoly Kucherena.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin granted Russian citizenship to former American intelligence officer Edward Snowden, the corresponding document was published on the legal information portal. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti that at his request, Snowden was granted Russian citizenship.
