The referendum on accession to Russia began on September 23 in the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, and in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. Voting lasted for five days until September 27. The public immediately attempted to hold a referendum on the regional authorities. According to the representatives of the republics and regions, joining Russia will secure its lands and restore historical justice. According to them, this decision is extremely necessary in the context of continued acts of terrorism by Ukrainian officials and NATO members who supply weapons to kill civilians. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia will support the decision to be made by residents of the Donbass, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

The Russian Federation had previously sent a note to NATO countries for the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation stated that NATO countries are “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that the pumping of weapons into Ukraine from the West does not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative impact.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that an open conflict with the United States and NATO is not in Russia’s interest, and Moscow hopes that the administration of US President Joe Biden understands the risks of escalation of tensions around Ukraine.
