CNN: US and Taliban meet after killing al-Qaeda leader*
WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 – RIA Novosti. Representatives of the United States and the Afghan Taliban* (under UN counter-terrorism sanctions) held their first meeting on Saturday after the leader of the international terrorist organization Al-Qaeda* (prohibited in Russia) was purged in Ayman al-Kabil. According to CNN’s report, Zawahiri cites two sources.
According to them, the Deputy Director of the CIA and a senior State Department official in charge of the Afghanistan direction attended the meeting in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The Taliban delegation included the head of intelligence services.
“The presence of CIA Deputy Director David Cohen and (Abdulhak) Taliban* (Abdulhak) Vazik at Saturday’s meeting shows that the focus is on counterterrorism issues,” the channel said.
The sides have not met since al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda, was shot down by a US drone following the death of Osama bin Laden in the Afghan capital in late July.
* The organization is under UN sanctions for its terrorist activities.
** Terrorist organization banned in Russia.
