UN General Assembly adopts anti-Russia resolution that does not recognize referendums
UN, 12 October – RIA Novosti. The UN General Assembly adopted an anti-Russian resolution not recognizing the referendums in the LPR, DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, RIA Novosti correspondent reports.
Western countries had previously prepared a resolution that did not recognize the referendums and called on all countries, international organizations and UN expert bodies not to recognize changes in the status of “Ukraine’s Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions”. Also in the text there is a call not to recognize the accession of the four regions to the Russian Federation. In addition, Moscow is asked to immediately withdraw its forces from Ukraine. The document expresses “Ukraine’s commitment to its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.” Moscow is condemned for allegedly “arranging referendums” and “attempting to annex” the DPR, LPR and the two regions.
143 countries voted in favor of the resolution and five of them voted against, 35 countries abstained. Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea, Nicaragua voted against.
Earlier, RIA Novosti sources reported that the United States and its partners actively persuaded countries to support the Western resolution draft.
Russia on Monday requested a secret ballot for the resolution, which would clearly reduce the number of countries supporting the project as it does not reflect which country voted for which resolution. However, the General Assembly did not support this proposal.
On Tuesday, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the US did not use tactics to scare other countries before the vote.
Referendums on the entry of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions into the Russian Federation were held on September 23-27. 99.23% of the voters in the DPR, 98.42% in the LPR, 87.05% in the Kherson region and 93.11% of the voters in the Zaporozhye region supported this decision. On September 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke in the Kremlin after the results of the referendum, after which he signed agreements with the heads of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions on the admission of the regions to Russia. Later, Putin signed federal laws confirming the admission of these territories to the Russian Federation.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the decision to include the regions in Russia would have no legal force and deserve condemnation. According to him, such a decision “cannot be combined with the international legal framework”, is a “dangerous escalation” and “should not be taken”.
Vasily Nebenzia, Permanent Representative of Russia, reminded the recognition of Kosovo in the UN Security Council before, saying that the West, which does not recognize the referendums on accession to Russia, shows double standards. There are other examples in history of Western recognition of the separation and annexation of lands without the consent of the states to which they belong. Texas seceded from Mexico in 1836 and then became part of the United States; In 1990 and 1991, Slovenia and Croatia held referendums on independence from Yugoslavia without the consent of their authorities and were recognized; In 1991, referendums for independence from the USSR were held in Estonia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan – against the will of the Soviet leadership and the entire Soviet people who spoke in favor of the All-Union referendum. protect the Union; and during the unification of the FRG and the GDR, no one asked the opinion of the population – the absorption of East Germany by the West took place without a referendum.
At the same time, the results of referendums in Western countries are ignored. In 2017, 90% of the autonomy residents voted for Catalonia’s independence from Spain, after which Madrid began massive crackdowns against independence supporters. At the end of 2017, residents of Italian Veneto and Lombardy demanded greater autonomy from Rome in referendums, but the process of conferring new powers from central authorities stalled.

From September 23 to 27, referendums on accession to Russia in the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions will last for five days. By Monday, voting will take place in neighboring districts, and on Tuesday, the polls will open for everyone to vote.

Most residents of Melitopol tend to vote on the first day. “We haven’t had time to get started yet today, and there were already a lot of people who wanted to vote. We told them that voting would take place at the ballot box on the 27th, and before that at home. I really want to cast their votes,” said city election commissions.

The operational headquarters was deployed in the LPR to ensure voting security. Units of the People’s Militia were put on high alert.

The head of the local People’s Chamber said that the referendum in the LPR was like a bone in the throat for Ukraine, so the republic expects Kiev to try to disrupt it and take measures to protect polling stations.

Parcels have been opened in the regions of Russia for internally displaced persons.

The ballot boxes in Moscow opened on Friday morning in a calm atmosphere.

Olga Makeeva, Ambassador of the Donetsk People’s Republic to Russia, voted at the DPR embassy in Moscow.
