The Israeli military attacked the funeral procession of Palestinian journalist Shirin Abu Akle as he was being taken out of a French hospital in Jerusalem and beaten with batons by mourners to prevent Abu Akle from carrying the coffin on his shoulders. As they raise the Palestinian flag, elements of Israeli forces disperse the crowd.
Thousands of mourners, some of them carrying Palestinian flags and chanting “Palestine, Palestine”, attended the funeral of Shirin, who was killed earlier this week while covering an Israeli military attack on the Jenin camp.
The European Union (EU) on Friday expressed its “disgust” at the “useless” use of Israeli forces during the funeral of Palestinian-American journalist Shirin Abu Akleh.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said 33 people were injured during the funeral, six of whom were taken to hospitals, while Israeli authorities said six people were arrested.
After speculating that a Qatari correspondent for Al-Jazeera had been killed in a Palestinian shootout, Israel returned on Friday and said it did not rule out that the bullet was fired from the gun of one of its soldiers. The Palestinian Authority, Al Jazeera and Doha accused the Israeli army of killing him.
