Kishida at the East Asia Summit criticizes China’s actions in the East China Sea

TOKYO, November 13 – RIA Novosti. At the East Asia Summit (EAS), Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida criticized Beijing’s increased activity in the East China Sea that “violates Japanese sovereignty”.

“China’s continued actions violating Japan’s sovereignty in the East China Sea have intensified,” the head of Japanese government Jiji news agency quoted.

In addition, Kishida expressed her concerns about the situation around Taiwan. Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a very important issue that directly concerns regional security.

The main obstacle preventing the normalization of relations between China and Japan is the territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands (Chinese name is Diaoyu) in the East China Sea. While Japan claims to have occupied them since 1895, Beijing recalls that on Japanese maps of 1783 and 1785 Diaoyu was designated as a territory of China. After World War II, the islands came under the control of the United States and in 1972, together with the island of Okinawa, they were transferred to Japan. In Taiwan and mainland China, Japan is believed to hold the islands illegally. Japan believes that the islands have always been an integral part of Okinawa Prefecture and rightfully belonged to it.

The territorial dispute between China and Japan has particularly deteriorated relations between the two countries after the Japanese government bought three of the five uninhabited islands that Beijing considers Chinese territory in 2012 from a private Japanese owner. After the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe met with the Prime Minister of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Li Keqiang and Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to China in 2018, there was a warming up in the relations between the two countries. At the same time, an agreement was reached to initiate an incident prevention mechanism in the East China Sea, which includes the establishment of an emergency hotline to prevent accidental armed conflicts in the air and at sea from 8 June 2018.
