Serbian President Vučić fears ‘hell on earth’ in Kosovo by Pristina’s actions

BELGRADE, November 20 – RIA Novosti. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić expects Kosovo Albanian authorities not to reverse their decision on fines for Serbian plates and for a sharp escalation in Kosovo and Metohija after 21 November due to Pristina’s controversial measures.

The Serbian leader reminded that a new round of negotiations is planned between Belgrade and Pristina on Monday morning, which will take place in Brussels, the EU reported. The “prime minister” of Kosovo’s self-proclaimed republic, Albin Kurti, is also expected to attend the ceremony. The main issue is that the decision of the Kosovo Albanian authorities to impose fines on car numbers issued by the Serbian authorities will come into effect on November 21.

“If (Kurti – ed.) wanted to postpone the decision, they would have delayed it earlier. I think the idea here is that he should be given the opportunity to delay the so-called right decision. But Kurti showed that he did not want the Serbs. Kosovo and Metohija,” Vučić said on TV Prva on Sunday.

According to him, if Pristina begins to force controversial measures, the situation in northern Kosovo and Metohija will inevitably worsen.

“The Kosovo police have nothing to do in the north of Kosovo and in Metohija, then it will be “hell” on earth … In this case, the Serbian people will stand by the people and the Serbs will defend their homes. The Serbian leader reminded that Belgrade is doing everything to keep the peace in the region .

In the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica, a peaceful rally was held on 6 November by local Serbs, who make up the majority in these parts of the city. Serbs have resigned from the courts, the police, the “government”, the “parliament” and local authorities of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo, due to the decision to dismiss the head of Pristina’s regional police department. “North” Nenad Djuric from his post. It had previously refused to issue a warning for license plates issued by Serbian authorities. In particular, Kosovo “police” and “customs” officials at the “Brnjak” and “Yarine” checkpoints resigned on Sunday. Just like their 300 colleagues from the police in the north of the region, they quit their jobs.

The Serbian President pointed out that replacing retired Serbs in the Kosovo “police” with Albanians would spell disaster in the northern part of the province, where Serbs still form the majority of the population. According to Vučić, the NATO alliance KFOR and the EU rule of law mission EULEХ should temporarily take over the functions of law enforcement in the north of the region. An increased presence of Kosovo police has been noticed at forts and checkpoints in the northern part of the province.

Kosovo Albanian authorities are asking local Serbs to re-register all cars with Kosovo symbols and “RKS” license plates by the Serbian authorities with the letters “KM” and plan to impose fines from November 21. 150 Euros for violators. On September 20, 2021, self-proclaimed Kosovo authorities banned entry with Serb numbers and deployed a special unit of the Ministry of the Interior (ROSU) to the north of the area. In response, local Serbs blocked the road to the Yarine and Brnjak checkpoints with construction equipment and continued the blockade despite “police” attempts to disperse them using tear gas and special equipment. From the central Serbian side, military personnel in armored vehicles served on the highway, helicopters and warplanes flew around the area. Then, in negotiations with the mediation of Western countries, a temporary solution was reached by affixing symbols on license plates at the entrances and exits from Kosovo and Metohija to central Serbia.
