“With its current institutional structure and current budget architecture, the European Union currently does not have the conditions to justify the expectations it has created,” he said.

The politician stressed that reform and restructuring are necessary to further expand the union.

Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine’s accession to the EU on February 28. At the summit held in Brussels on 23 June, the EU heads of state and government approved the granting of candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova to join the union. To begin accession negotiations, countries must meet a number of conditions, including reforms.

Obtaining candidate status is only the beginning of a long journey to join the EU. Turkey has been a candidate since 1999, North Macedonia since 2005, Montenegro since 2010 and Serbia since 2012. Croatia became the last country to join the EU in 2013, a ten-year period.
